As requested, you can now buy yourself a DIY Thor's hammer kit. The purpose of this kit is to provide all those parts that require soldering + some harder to find extras in a kit form. What you need to complete this kit is a boiler where the column connection will be mounted, 1.7 meters of 54mm pipe (copper, stainless steel or aluminium), packing material of your choice, the control valve of your choice (+ a thermostat if you go E-ARC), connectors in between the valve and the liebig, column insulation and some hoses with garden hose connectors. As people have different needs for those parts and postages are usually high they were excluded from this kit.

To put your still together you need some basic handtools (drill, file, hacksaw) and some PTFE tape and aquarium grade silicone.

The kit has:

Parts to assemble a new design Thor's hammer still head (you need to add 2*160mm pieces of 54mm pipe) - the head can be taken apart for cleaning or storage

A 54mm sweat joint with new design vapor trap and a connection for 1/2” valve (NPT or European style thread)

A 54mm sweat joint with provision for thermo probe attachment

A 54mm sweat joint with a collar plate that can be bolted to your boiler lid

A liebig condenser with brass garden hose connectors (optional)

Latest design centering sieves (3 pieces)

Amphora seals for easy column assembly (10 pieces)

Here's a photo of the first prototype kit:

The performance of this kit surpasses the traditional Thor's hammer as presented in the second edition of my book. Here are two distillation runs made with my old version and with this kit using the same SPP packed column pieces. The mash was a 7kg sugar mash, distillation was straight from the mash and runs were ended at 99C boiler temperature. Vertical line is liters collected, horizontal line is time.

If we calculate in a heat up at 3kW and the usual stabilization phase it means that this still can process a 7kg sugar mash in to 3.75 liters of neutral 95.6% azeotrope in just 4 hours and 15 minutes. This also means that there's not enough time for the mash to start scorching which means that you can distill using uncleared mashes. As usual with Thor's hammer design no heads or tails cuts are needed.

The price of this kit without liebig condenser is 280 euros (with the incredible rise of plumbing component prices) + postage and the liebig adds 80 euros extra if you want one.

I build these kits on order so it can take 2-4 weeks to make one if I'm out of parts. If I have the parts it takes usually few days. If interested PM me (rkr) for postage quote and more information.

The kit will include instructions and suggestions for putting your still together with this kit.

Slainte, Riku

Since people have been asking what's the Thorshammer still I'll write a short explanation:

Thorshammer is my still development / design that automatically removes heads during distillation run. I got the design idea during my first continuous still tests and then further developed it for batch distillation. The Thorshammer design in it's latest form uses VM-E-ARC principle (Vapor Management - Electric - Automatic Reflux Control - also developed by me) which automatically leaves all tails in the boiler and lower parts of the column while ensuring that the product ABV remains at 95.6% ABV.

This when combined to the automatic heads removal means that the still produces neutral azeotrope only while getting rid of heads and tails automatically. In addition to that the ARC system automatically adjusts the product take off rate to remain optimal, so once the product collection is started the still requires no further adjustments and pumps happily out neutral azeotrope until all ethanol is gone.

It is also rather fast in doing so as can be seen from those graphs in the first post. When processing higher ABV low wines (30ish% ABV) I easily exceeded the speed of 3 liters / hour of neutral azeotrope. However, since this is a hobby still I'm concentrating on 25 liter mashes that people usually ferment. To process a 7 kg sugar mash in to 3.75 liters of neutral azeotrope takes 4 hours and 15 minutes from turning the power on to turning the power off. It's worth noting that you could squeeze out some 200ml more if you let the still run for another hour but for most it's just not worth it.

The design and theory behind (+ many other designs / variations of theme) are presented in my book "Designing and building automatic stills - second edition" and the forum mentioned is a discussion place for those who have purchased the book. Although I must admit that quite a lot of further concept development has also taken place in the forum Smile The kit itself presents the latest technology incoporating some new things that came out after the book was published.

A short update. I will no longer stock these kits but I will build them on order. Delivery time is about 2 weeks. The price varies based on component prices but in general copper part prices are going up. You can ask me for a quote if you are serious about getting a kit, I will update the price information on the post above occasionally so it should give you a starting point.

I have also done some updates, a thicker copper plate for the column connection and a pressure test of 15 minutes with full water mains pressure instead of operating pressure.
